Flight by Kimberly L. Becker Book Signing

Saturday, October 16th    1:00 pm
We’re inviting local poetry writer Kimberly L. Becker to Main Street Books for a reading and signing of her latest release, Flight.
About the book:
Flight takes its shape from a Cherokee ceremony for the dead, with opposing yet balancing movements of remembrance and release. This book explores both internal and external processes of enmity and loss, circling towards a posture of peace or at least acceptance. With its double meaning of fleeing and ascendance, FLIGHT mines the tension between memory and forgetting, where beauty does not go unnoticed and ordinary moments become sacred offerings. There is a danger of forgetting and a danger of remembering: which will we choose?
About Kimberly:
Of mixed descent, including Cherokee, Kimberly L. Becker is author of four poetry collections: Words Facing East and The Dividings (WordTech Editions), The Bed Book (Spuyten Duyvil), and Flight (MadHat Press). Individual poems appear widely in journals and anthologies, including North Dakota Quarterly, Indigenous Message on Water, Women Write Resistance: Poets Resist Gender Violence, and Tending the Fire: Native Voices and Portraits. She has held grants from Maryland, North Carolina, and New Jersey and residencies at Hambidge, Weymouth, and Wildacres. Her work has been nominated for a Pushcart. Reading venues include Busboys and Poets and The National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, DC. She has served as mentor for PEN America’s Prison Writing and AWP’s Writer to Writer programs and has also adapted traditional Cherokee stories for Cherokee Youth in Radio. www.kimberlylbecker.com
